Quality EV floor mats aren't cheap — especially custom-fit sets made from premium TPE or all-weather rubber. The good news is that with a little consistent care, a good set of mats can last the lifetime of your vehicle. Here are five practical strategies to maximise their longevity.

1. Rotate Your Mats Periodically

Driver-side mats take the most punishment — they endure constant foot entry, heel grinding, and pedal contact. If your mat set includes identical-size front mats, swap the driver and passenger mats every six months to distribute wear evenly. This simple habit can meaningfully extend the usable life of both mats.

For rear mats, rotation is less critical but still worthwhile if you regularly carry passengers.

2. Treat Rubber and TPE Mats with a UV Protectant

Sunlight streaming through your EV's windows — especially vehicles with panoramic glass roofs — generates UV radiation that gradually breaks down rubber and TPE compounds. Over time, this causes:

  • Fading and discolouration
  • Surface cracking or brittleness
  • Loss of flexibility in cold temperatures

Applying a rubber protectant or UV-blocking dressing two to three times per year keeps mats supple and prevents this degradation. Use products that are silicone-free to avoid creating a slippery surface.
